In a YouTube Video released early Monday morning, Officials with the Montgomery Public School System unveiled the names and mascots for 2 local schools that recently underwent name changes because of connections to the civil war and slavery.

Robert E. Lee High school has been renamed to Percy Julian High school, and it’s new athletics mascot will be “The Pheonix”.  The other high school formerly named after confederate president Jefferson Davis, has been renamed JAG, in honor of Judge Frank Johnson Jr, Ralph Abernathy and Rev. Robert Graetz, and their Mascot will be the Jaguars.

Johnson was a constitutional lawyer and federal judge. Ralph Abernathy and Rev. Robert Graetz are two titans of the civil rights movement. The name “JAG” comes from the first letter of each honoree’s last name.

Dr. Percy L. Julian was a Montgomery-born Black chemist and pioneer in medicine.

The new names were announced in November of 2022.
